Choose around the material

Logs, brush, demolition debris and loose mixed material require different jaw geometry and retention. Describe the typical load, its shape and where it must be placed. A large opening is useful only if the tool can hold the material securely through the intended movement and the carrier is approved for that application.

Check the complete moving envelope

Document the grapple and rotator, if fitted, as a combined attachment with their actual mass and connections. Verify the carrier’s applicable lifting or handling limits at the load position. Check hose protection, visibility and clearance through the full permitted movement; added rotation also requires appropriate controls and hydraulic routing.

Inspect structure and closing action

Look for cracked welds, bent tines, worn hinge pins and damaged cylinder rods. Inspect hose abrasion and fittings. In a controlled demonstration, observe smooth opening and closing and whether the jaws meet as designed. Ask why any plates or reinforcement were added and obtain the repair history before treating them as an improvement.
