Define pushing and finishing separately
Describe the material, approximate push pattern, ground conditions and required finish. Ask for a blade arrangement suited to that work. Caterpillar identifies distinct applications for straight, universal, semi-universal and variable-angle blades. Do not use blade capacity as a stand-alone productivity claim: the actual task and operating conditions matter.
Identify blade and running-gear configuration
Record blade type, width, shoes, track gauge, counterweight and ripper or winch where fitted. Ask which attachments are included and how they affect transport. A wide-track configuration should be evaluated against the intended ground and the manufacturer's configuration-specific information, not treated as a universal upgrade. Compare length with the blade in the same stated position.
Request a structural and wear assessment
Include a component-level undercarriage report and inspection of blade linkage, C-frame or push arms, pivots and rear attachment structure as applicable. Ask a qualified inspector to evaluate travel, steering, drive response, leakage and warning history. Photograph repair areas and obtain records rather than making a diagnosis from paint or weld appearance alone.
Verify technology and price the package
If grade control affects the price, identify receivers, displays, antennas, subscriptions and calibration arrangements actually included. A brochure feature list does not confirm that used hardware remains fitted or usable. Add missing components, repairs, transport and initial service to the comparison before assigning value to a technology-equipped machine.
Decision worksheet
| Decision | Evidence to collect | How it changes the shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Blade | Installed type and intended material | Connects configuration with the work |
| Undercarriage | Measurements and repair plan | Makes near-term wear spending visible |
| Grade control | Hardware inventory and activation evidence | Separates installed capability from brochure options |
Before you decide
Questions to close out
- Record blade, shoes and rear attachments.
- Obtain a measured undercarriage report.
- Check included technology and licences.
- Quote transport in the sale configuration.
A lower-hour dozer can still carry substantial wear or technology costs. Compare the complete working package after the inspection and configuration are understood.
