Record the receiving body
Collect body-side height, loading position, approach space, rated payload and material density. Check whether the loader or excavator can reach the actual receiving area from a realistic position. Hinge-pin height is not dump clearance, and excavator maximum loading height must keep its boom, arm and bucket basis.
Choose the bucket and linkage together
The Cat 950 reference’s overall length excludes its bucket, while the Deere 644 P-Tier reference includes a named bucket on the ground. Do not use those lengths as a like-for-like access ranking. For loading, identify linkage, coupler, bucket and tire package, then confirm clearance and reach from the matched working diagram.
Model loading and haulage together
Use supplier-supported bucket payload for the material and truck rated payload to assess a loading plan. Include approach, fill, travel or swing, dump and return, plus truck waiting. A nominal bucket volume does not prove the payload or a fixed pass count; document the assumptions behind any cycle estimate.
Inspect the parts that control the cycle
Review bucket edges and structure, pins, coupler, lift or front linkage, tires/tracks and brakes as appropriate. Compare inspection and transport costs with required attachment changes. Consider an excavator where digging and loading are combined, or a loader where stockpile access and carry form the main task.
