Define the vegetation and finish
Document vegetation type and size, ground conditions, access, retained areas and the required treatment of stumps and debris. Distinguish mulching from felling, extraction and loading. Do not treat a mulcher’s working width as proof that it can process every material encountered on the site.
Compare a dedicated carrier with an attachment
The RAPTOR 300 reference describes a purpose-built carrier with a mounted M650m head; its total head width differs from cutting width. A CTL-mounted mulcher needs a separately verified carrier/tool combination including flow, pressure, return, cooling and protective equipment. Matching engine power alone is insufficient.
Plan what happens after cutting
A feller buncher such as the 853M has a different role from a mulching carrier. If stems are retained, include extraction and a landing/loading plan. If material stays on site, confirm the specified final condition and how debris will be managed. The equipment-selection brief should reflect the whole sequence.
Price wear and preparation honestly
Inspect rotor tools or felling-head components, mounting interfaces, protective structures, tracks and cooling maintenance under manufacturer procedures. Ask for the actual head service history. Model tooling, cleaning, transport and support machines with stated assumptions; do not assign a universal clearing rate or tool life.
