Excavator Tail Swing and Access Planning

A machine can fit through an entrance and still lack room to work. Plan the access route, upper-structure clearance and digging envelope as separate spaces.

Draw the access route

Measure the narrowest opening, overhead restrictions, turns and unloading area. Record the travel configuration, track position and attachment. Include anything projecting beyond the quoted width. Use a simple site sketch with fixed obstacles identified; do not rely on a gate width alone when the machine must turn immediately after entering.

Identify the tail-swing arrangement

Conventional, reduced and zero-tail terminology describes different rear-envelope arrangements. Bobcat's compact-excavator guide explains these categories, but the exact radius and configuration still belong to the selected model. A zero-tail description does not mean every part of the machine remains within the track width throughout work. The boom, arm, bucket and any attachments require their own clearance assessment.

Check work and load geometry

Mark the intended machine position, trench or excavation area and spoil or loading destination. Keep ground reach, digging depth, cutting height and loading height distinct. If material handling includes lifting, consult the correct configuration-specific lifting information with a qualified operator. Neither a compact rear envelope nor a reach dimension establishes an allowable load at that position.

Compare a smaller machine with a different setup

If the first choice does not fit, consider whether a different position, attachment or machine class changes the task. Record the effect on transport, setup and the need for additional equipment. Do not solve a clearance issue by assuming an undocumented posture or by borrowing dimensions from a related model. Keep the final site sketch with the machine brief.
