Define the load and placement geometry

Record the load weight, dimensions, center of gravity and required placement height and reach. Confirm that the fork and carriage ratings and the machine’s applicable guidance support that combination. On a telehandler, use the exact attachment-specific load chart; the headline machine capacity does not apply throughout the boom envelope.

Inspect the forks as a matched assembly

Check identification markings, locking devices, carriage engagement and visible deformation or cracking. Have wear and damage assessed under the applicable manufacturer inspection criteria. Do not assume a pair is matched because the tines have the same apparent length, and do not treat an undocumented weld as an acceptable repair.

Include visibility and approach in the trial

Evaluate the operator’s view of the tips, pallet entry and placement from the actual cab. Check the route, ground conditions and receiving area. Compare the complete carriage and forks offered with the sale, including replacement parts and locking hardware, instead of pricing bare tines against a complete assembly.
