Identify the actual paving package
Record tractor model, screed model, heating system, extensions, end gates and grade or slope controls. Identify which width is standard and which requires included extensions or other hardware. A maximum width in a product table does not prove that the used machine is equipped to pave it. Ask for a complete inventory and installation documentation.
Inspect material flow and screed condition
Have a specialist evaluate hopper, conveyors, augers, screed plates, extension mechanisms and heating. Caterpillar's paving guidance explains how material feed and screed behaviour interact. For buying purposes, request evidence that the installed systems operate and ask the inspector to identify wear requiring attention. Do not infer finished-mat quality from a static photograph.
Plan a meaningful demonstration
A cold walkaround and control check can identify some issues, but they cannot replicate every operating condition. Agree what can be tested, who will operate the machine and which limitations remain. Keep any screed or heating defects separate from cosmetic condition. Confirm the condition and inclusion of sensors, control units and cables needed by the intended crew.
Price setup and support
Include wear parts, screed service, missing extensions, transport, initial commissioning and specialist assistance. Ask who can support the exact tractor/screed combination locally. Check the transport position of the hopper, screed and canopy against the documented dimensions. A machine that needs substantial configuration work may not be ready for a scheduled paving contract simply because its engine runs.
