Building an Asphalt Paving and Rolling Package

Match the paver, screed, delivery flow and rolling equipment to the project specification. A paver’s maximum width cannot describe the complete paving operation.

Caterpillar CB7 tandem roller standing on fresh asphalt roadwork, both drums grounded on smooth dark asphalt, gravel shoulders and distant trees.

Define the paving brief

Collect width, thickness and finish requirements, access, delivery conditions and the approved paving/compaction process. Identify transitions, obstacles and confined areas. The project team must establish mix and acceptance requirements; this guide prepares the equipment questions rather than prescribing temperatures or a rolling pattern.

Choose carrier and screed together

The AP500 wheeled reference with SE47 FM screed differs from the tracked AP555 package. Identify the actual screed, heating, extensions and compaction equipment before comparing operating or transport width. A web maximum that conflicts with a matched brochure remains a question to resolve, not an extra width to promise.

Balance delivery and compaction support

Plan truck approach, material transfer, paver movement and the rollers needed for the specified process. A compact tandem roller and a larger roller are not interchangeable simply because both have two drums. Include edge and restricted-area work, water supply, cleaning and standby arrangements in the equipment brief.

Inspect the process components

Inspect material conveyors, augers, screed plates and heating, plus roller drums, scrapers, water systems and vibration components as fitted. Confirm grade controls and sensors actually included and serviceable. Compare the complete crew package, setup and mobilization using supported utilization assumptions.

Questions to close out

  • Record the complete screed package.
  • Resolve conflicting maximum-width references.
  • Confirm included controls and sensors.
  • Quote rollers, delivery support and transport together.

A coherent paving package connects material delivery, laying and compaction without treating any single maximum as the operating plan.
